Complaint Filed Against Indiana Nursing Home Alleges Neglect and Wrongful Death
LOGANSPORT, INDIANA — The family of a former patient of the Chase Center nursing home facility has filed a “proposed complaint” with the Indiana Department of Insurance alleging negligence and wrongful death after the patient suffered at least eleven (11) falls while under the care of the facility and also developed multiple “advanced pressure sores.” According to the publicly filed complaint, the patient’s eleventh fall caused a right hip fracture that resulted in significant pain and suffering, a precipitous decline in the patient’s physical condition, and the development of “deep tissue injury pressure ulcers” on the buttocks which were not discovered and/or documented until the day the patient died.
The complaint alleges that the nursing home failed to comply with “minimum regulatory standards intended for the purpose of protecting patients.” The complaint further states that the nursing home failed “to provide sufficient nursing and support staffing to meet the needs and ensure the safety of patients.”
According to the complaint, investigations conducted by the Indiana State Department of Health (“ISDH”) resulted in citations for failing failing to ensure working alarms and for failing to provide adequate supervision of a patient who was left alone. The ISDH investigation also found deficiencies related to the “treatment/services to prevent/heel pressure sores,” according to the complaint.
The complaint alleges that these violations were “strongly indicative of serious systemic failures in the hiring, staffing, training, oversight, and management” of the nursing home staff.
Logansport Memorial Hospital, Careage of Logansport, Inc., and Roeing Corporation are among the defendants named in the complaint and are alleged to have been “responsible for owning, operating, managing, administrating, overseeing, staffing, and/or rendering or supervising care and/or services to patients.”
According to the complaint, the named defendants have refused to accept any responsibility for the harm to the patient to date.
